New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day—
everything is in blossom!–
I feel about average.
Kobayashi Issa (1763 – 1828)
At the time this poem was written, Japan celebrated the New Year on
the first day of Spring, hence the reference to everything being in
blossom. Though I saw in the paper recently that the unseasonably warm
days we experienced in December have caused some trees to start blooming
prematurely, so there you go.
I successfully avoided any reveling
last night; after work, I went to see the 10:10 PM showing of
Night at the Museum. By the time the movie ended, it was
past midnight. Success! And the movie was pretty good too. Dumb but
fun, which is both was I expected and wanted.
