Ten random things: July 8

Ten paintings of women reading found in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston:

  1. Auguste Toulmouche, Reading Lesson
  2. Kondô Katsunobu, Courtesan Reading a Book
  3. Edgar Degas, Visit to a Museum
  4. Mary Stevenson Cassatt, Mrs. Duffee Seated on a Striped Sofa, Reading
  5. John Singer Sargent, Simplon Pass: Reading
  6. William Worcester Churchill, Leisure
  7. Mary S. Chapin, Solitude
  8. Laura Coombs Hills, Fire Opal (Grace Mutell)
  9. Edmund Charles Tarbell, Girl Reading
  10. Lilian Westcott Hale, L'Edition de Luxe

In a manner of speaking, I started this list in 2007. I was working in the bookstore at the time, and we carried a calendar that year that featured many of these paintings. I took down the names and emailed them to myself from work so I could look at them later on the MFA website. Which I finally got around to on Tuesday, when I happened to run across that email still in my inbox.
