A couple of interesting anniversaries are being observed today. It's the 35th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in a storm off Whitefish Point in Lake Superior. You can thank Gordon Lightfoot for the fact that anyone outside the Great Lakes states remembers this particular tragedy; his 1976 song about the loss of the ship reached number two on the Billboard singles chart and is still widely played today. You should watch the video below even if you don't like the song; it's a remarkable tribute to the men who died onboard. It incorporates historical footage of the ship, news coverage of the wreck, underwater video of wrecked ship, and photographs of the crew. It's really quite moving, so give it a look.

On a happier note, today is the 41st anniversary of the first episode of Sesame Street, so here's everybody's favorite Sesame Street song. (Note: if this is not your favorite Sesame Street song, you had better have a darn good reason.)
