Ten states that repealed their anti-miscegenation laws prior to all such laws being ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court:
- South Dakota (1957)
- Nebraska (1963)
- Pennsylvania (1780)
- Rhode Island (1881)
- New Mexico (1866)
- Maryland (1967)
- Iowa (1851)
- Nevada (1959)
- Washington (1868)
- Idaho (1959)
Guess which states still had anti-miscegenation laws on the books when the Supreme Court invalidated? The answer will not surprise you. (Well, one of them might.) My current home state of Wisconsin, incidentally, never enacted an anti-miscegenation law. Go us!
I would tell you why I happened to be looking into the history of anti-miscegenation laws today, but the explanation is pretty ridiculous even by my standards, so never mind.
