Movies in 2012

I watched a bunch of movies in 2012! This is rather a change of pace for me; while I used to go to the movies a lot, I’ve tapered off quite a bit in recent years. It’s so expensive! And getting to and from the theater can be a hassle when there isn’t one within walking or biking distance and you don’t have a car. But in August of 2012 I decided that I would start making an effort to watch more movies on DVD. I also started taking advantage of the films that are screened at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at Madison Public Library branches, which are usually free. Add to that the handful of films I could get rides to or I thought were worth going to the trouble of seeing in a commercial theater, and you get a year in which I saw 57 movies. Not bad! If anyone cares, I’ve listed them below the cut, in approximately the order I saw them. Except as noted, these were all seen on DVD.

My top ten were, in alphabetical order, Contagion, Dan in Real Life, Lars and the Real Girl, Moneyball, Moonrise Kingdom — which I liked so much I went to see it on a big screen at UW-Madison after having seen it on DVD — Nurse Betty, Persuasion , Sita Sings the Blues, 21 Jump Street, and Up in the Air. My bottom five: Cyrus, Greenberg,Hotel Transylvania, The Last Word, Rachel Getting Married. For the most part, the movies in my bottom five were more boring than bad, though Hotel Transylvania falls into the latter category. Luckily, that was one I saw for free.
