Two things happened in 1979: Iranian revolutionaries stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran, taking 90 hostages; and Stephen Spielberg made the movie 1941. I mention this merely because it occurred to me the other day that Argo is approximately as far removed from the event it depicts — an event I remember very clearly, having been 11 at the time — as was 1941 in 1979. The gap is somewhat wider in the latter case — 38 years vs. 33 — but close enough.

Another way to think of it: my stepbrother Sean had a baby last year. (A cute one too!) The events dramatized in Argo are to her what the events dramatized in The Grapes of Wrath are to me.

Either way, I am old. That is all.
