Taking myself out to the ball game

I'm going to a baseball game tonight! I hope. See, there's a severe weather alert in place, and since the Madison Mallards don't have one of those fancy retractable-roof stadiums, there's no small chance that the game will be rained out.

That said, when I got up this morning, the hourly forecast said it'd be thunderstorming right now, but looking out the window I can see that it's not raining at all. Weather.com still thinks a thunderstorm is on its way, but the heavy rains they were predicting to follow the thunderstorms have been downgraded to "light rain" followed by "few showers" and finally by "cloudy." Assuming all that does come to pass, that means the game may start late -- scheduled start time 7:05 p.m. -- but it almost certainly will start.

The rain, if it comes, might in past years have put a crimp in our plan for a pregame picnic. But last year we tried something new, paying a bit extra for the Mallards to prepare all-you-can-eat ballpark food and serve it up to us under a big tent behind the first base line, and everyone seemed to dig it, so we're doing it again this year. So if it rains before the game, so what? We'll be under the tent.

"We" in this context, by the way, is my church. We do a Mallards outing every summer, and it's always a lot of fun, partly because I like the people I church with and enjoy hanging out with them, but also because it's fun going to Mallards games. Mallards baseball is baseball in the true Veeckian tradition of wacky stunts, silly on-field entertainment between innings, and cheap seats. It's a collegiate league, so it's not up to MLB standards, or even MiLB standards, but the players are all high-caliber collegiate players, and they play real baseball, or as close as you can get to it and still have the designated hitter rule in effect.
