Live-blogging the Food Network Star finale

The problem with have viewers choose the winners of Food Network Star is that it makes the final episode of the season pretty much a total waste of 45 minutes. It was mostly recaps of what had happened during the previous ten weeks, but you know, it's not like the people watching the finale didn't watch those episodes. The interviews with the finalists were at best unenlightening and at worst featured Rodney. The questions from fans were, well, questions from fans, and speaking as a fan, questions from fans are often not worth answering.

There were a few segments that were worth the time it took to air them. The behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of the "romance" trailer from week four was interesting and funny. And the spotlight on Danushka was good. Episode-by-episode she was pretty annoying, but the montage was a lot more entertaining than I would have guessed. Not so much so that I would have wanted to see her win the competition, you understand, but for that one 90-second stretch, she was fun. Rodney's montage, on the other hand, just made him seem even more affected and annoying than ever.

Another problem with the finale was that Russell was revealed to have come in third. Like I said the other day, his pilot was the only one I thought would be worth watching. It wasn't great, but it wasn't sexist like Damaris's, nor did it have Rodney in it.

By far the high point of the show was the behind-the-scenes montage featuring judges Bobby Flay, Giada De Laurentiis, and Alton Brown. The three of them has a really enjoyable chemistry together, especially Giada and Alton. A close second was the montage that showed Chris intentionally antagonizing Rodney by standing behind him and whistling off key. I don't remember being overly fond of Chris before he was eliminated, but now I like him a lot better.

And now I like the season as a whole better knowing that Rodney didn't win. I didn't like her pilot, and I don't think Food Network needs another Southern cooking specialist, but once Russell was eliminated she was the only acceptable choice. I'd be curious to see the results of the voting. Did she earn more votes than Russell and Rodney combined, or did she squeak by with a plurality? Unfortunately, Food Network doesn't seem to be making that information public, damn their hides!
