So far, I've watched five new-to-me movies off these lists: Crazy, Stupid, Love.; Friends with Kids; The Holiday; How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days; and 27 Dresses. The last four would not make it anywhere near my list of favorite romantic comedies. As romances, they all worked reasonably well, but as comedies, not so much. 27 Dresses had a handful of chuckles, but the other three were dreadfully light on laffs. And while almost all romantic comedies are formulaic to a degree, 10 Days and 27 Dresses were particularly so. Or maybe it's just that they followed a formula I don't like, namely the one where the relationship is initiated by Party A under false pretenses and Party B storms off when the deception is uncovered but just can't stay away because the love is so strong. A tiresome trope, in my opinion, and not improved upon when doubled, as in 10 Days.
I did really like Crazy, Stupid, Love. though. It kept me laughing throughout and genuinely surprised me more than once. Of course, when you've got Steve Carrell as your lead, how hard is it to be funnier than a movie starring Matthew McConaughey?
