Second, the part about him leaving with the mixer reminded me of a story from my own past, which I'm putting up here, because reminiscing about my own misfortune in a comment on her status update strikes me as somewhat crass. Anyway, a few years ago, I was looking for a room to rent, and found one in a place that seemed ideal: a nicely furnished apartment that was literally on the other side of the parking lot from where I worked at the time. I met with the rentor to check the place out, paid him first and last months' rent, and moved in.
A couple of days later, I came home after work and found the whole place empty, save for a few items of my clothing. I'd been scammed! Apparently, the guy had broken into a vacant apartment, rekeyed the lock to give himself (and his confederates) free access, moved in a bunch of furniture to furnish the place, and posted a CraigsList ad for a room for rent. Then once they'd reeled in a sucker, they waited until they knew I'd be out of the apartment for the day, and then moved everything out, including most of my personal belongings.
Luckily, I didn't have many belongings at the time, but they did steal my laptop. Which was irritating, but the thing that really galled me, and was a dick move to rival my friend's ex-husband taking the mixer he'd never used, was that they also took most of the groceries I'd just bought the day before, including a 12-pack of Diet Coke. Now, that's just uncalled for. Stealing a laptop? Sure, what self-respecting thief would pass up that opportunity? But stealing a man's Diet Coke ... man, that's low.
The other irritating thing that resulted from that incident was that when I called the police to report it, they ended up arresting me. But that's a story for another day.
