This icon will be familiar to people who've been reading this LiveJournal since I started it. It was the first animated icon I ever made. But it had a problem: it was huge, exceeding the maximum allowed size for an icon by approximately 140K. So I set it aside.

Since then, I've learned more about making animated GIFs. Specifically, I learned some tricks to optimize them so that they were smaller. So I tweaked the palette, reconfigured the text, and when all was said and done, the new icon was a trim 33K, well under the size limit. So here it is, at long last making its debut as an official LiveJournal icon. Yay!

Creative endeavors

Over the past few weeks, I've totally revamped my LiveJournal page. Take a look! It may look a little funny if your screen resolution is higher than 1024x768, but you have to realize two things. First, the background photo is 68K as it is. Using a bigger version of the photo would be painful for anyone using dialup, such as me. Second, my resolution is 1024x768, and I don't care for the way the photo gets cropped when I use the bigger version. So in short, I did it the way I did because it suits my particular circumstance. And as Matt Groening once wrong, if you don't like it, you can lump it.

The photo used for the background was taken at Palisades-Kepler State Park outside of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in October 2002. Want to see the whole photo instead just the edges? Your wish is my command.

Oh, and I made this icon. I'm not sure why. Anyone wants it, it's yours.

  1. What was the last song you heard?
As in actually heard? Not just what's floating through my head? It was "Amazing Grace," being performed by a street musician standing outside the Metrorail station this morning when I came to work.
  2. What were the last two movies you saw?
The Pianist, Roman Polanski's Oscar-nominated World War II drama; and The Ballad of Bering Strait, a documentary about a bluegrass band from Russia.
  3. What were the last three things you purchased?
A bottle of water and a package of fat-free salad dressing from the cafeteria downstairs, a book of stamps, and a birthday card for my sister.
  4. What four things do you need to do this weekend?
Go to the gym and meet with my weight loss counselor; practice for my concert; do a couple loads of laundry; go to church.
  5. Who are the last five people you talked to?
My co-workers R., B. and T.; the cashier in the cafeteria; and the Post Office clerk.
