Houston diary IV

After volleyball last night, I watched "The Yoko Factor" and "Primeval" with the gang, but since I planned to go church this morning, I went to bed before they started in on "Restless." And indeed, I managed to rouse myself and make it to Rose Hill UMC for the 8:30 service. I was not overly impressed. The congregation was not as welcoming as one often sees in small churches, and the pastor was not an interesting speaker. Also, there were many sung responses I did not know and for which no music was provided. I hate that!

There were two particularly unusal things about the service. First, although today is Palm Sunday, they did not hand out palm fronds to the congregation. That's unprecendented in my experience. Second, they held an Easter egg hunt today between the 8:30 and 10:30 services. It's not unusual to hold Easter eggs hunts before Easter, but I've never heard of anyone doing it on Palm Sunday. Odd.

Following a morning of vigorous sitting around, I traded goodbye hugs with the gang and took off for the airport with jennlynnster and rustydog. Rusty and I happened to be flying home on the same airline, so I had the pleasure of her company for a few extra minutes at the airport, but all too soon we too had to hug goodbye, she heading to the B concourse, I to the C.

As I walked to my gate, I passed again the statue of George Bush I'd seen on Friday. I remain unimpressed, but seeing an unimpressive statue twice in three days is a small price to pay for a weekend as fun as this one.
