JHeaton's Day Off

Well, I don't have to go to work tomorrow. I suspected I wouldn't have to, but finding out wasn't too easy. The Office of Personnel Management announced hours ago that the "Federal government" would be closed tomorrow in anticipation of Hurricane Isabel, but the part of the Federal government for which I work doesn't go by what OPM says. Luckily, someone was manning the switchboard, and she connected me to my agency's operating status hotline, which gave me the information I needed.

I have to admit that I'm having trouble taking this storm seriously. When it comes to inclement weather, Washington DC is the Metropolitan Area That Cries Wolf. Schools close at the drop of a hat -- I vividly remember the first time I heard that one of the local school districts had sent their students home in anticipation of snow -- and people make mad dashes to the supermarket to stock up on bottled water, bread, and toilet paper every time the forecast calls for even the smallest snowfall. It's pathetic, really. But that's not the point. The point is that when the local news media hypes every storm as the Storm of the Century, it makes it very difficult to take them seriously, even though intellectually I know that this storm really will be pretty nasty. (The Governor of Virginia didn't help matters by declaring a state of emergency on Monday, when Isabel was still 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina.)

So now I need to decide what to do with my day off. I think I may go over to my brother's house. My eight-year-old niece has the day off too, and I think it's about time she was introduced to Bring It On. And maybe I'll finally get around to finishing my reports about my California trip.

First things first:

The Potion Maker
hcwoodwardium is a milky, runny turquoise gel obtained from the leaves of a wolfsbane plant.
jheatonium is a translucent, coarse tan powder created from the muscles of a bandersnatch.
Mixing hcwoodwardium with jheatonium causes a violent chemical reaction, producing a cloudy purple potion which gives the user the power of transfiguration.

And now, the weather report: it's fine. The sky is overcast, and we've experienced light rain on and off through the day. The wind is perhaps somewhat stiffer than usual, but not what I'd call strong. The power and the cable are both still on. And NOAA has reported that the hurricane has now made landfall... at Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. The worst of effects of the storm are expected to hit the Washington area after sunset. In other words, the Federal and local governments closed today for absolutely no reason at all.

This place drives me nuts.

And now a word from my niece Hannah, whom I helped with her spelling words tonight:

Uncle John is usually pretty nice, but tonight he was pretty mean because he made me do my spelling words over and over and over even though he knew I was really tired and didn't want to do it anymore. And I was hungry! We didn't stop until 7:45 PM! And then I didn't get a book read to me before bed because I didn't get all the stupid spelling words right. (That was my mom's idea though, not Uncle John's. But Uncle John thought it was a good idea, so he's still mean even though it wasn't his idea.)

To be fair, she could have had a book read to her before bed (or, more precisely, a chapter of a book) if she had studied harder. This is Hannah again:

I hate the word 'study'! It's stupid.

And now, a brief hurricane update: it's raining, and the wind is blowing pretty hard. The power has not gone out.

None. I asked Hannah to sing something, but she said no.
