Stone City is a real place, a small town in eastern Iowa. And it still looks much like this, though that nice bridge is long gone, replaced by a boring concrete one. That white building there on the right bank of the river was, many years after this painting was completed, turned into a cafe, which hosted acoustic musicians most Saturday nights; I attended several shows there while I was at Cornell College, which is a little less than sixteen miles south of Stone City.
