10-K, 10-B

Ten random things: February 9

Ten songs that won Grammys last night that, as far as I know, I've never heard:

  1. Welcome To Jamrock – Damian Marley
  2. Numb/Encore – Jay-Z Featuring Linkin Park
  3. So Amazing – Beyoncé & Stevie Wonder
  4. We Belong Together – Mariah Carey
  5. Feel Good Inc. – Gorillaz feat. De La Soul
  6. 69 Freedom Special – Les Paul & Friends
  7. Galvanize – The Chemical Brothers Featuring Q-Tip
  8. B.Y.O.B. – System Of A Down
  9. Gold Digger – Kanye West
  10. You'll Think Of Me – Keith Urban

I didn't watch the Grammys, because a) I had choir rehearsal last night, and b) the Grammys are deeply lame. It's almost impossible to take them seriously, because they get it so wrong so often. Also, I've never gotten the impression that the artists themselves care very much about them. Does any musician dream about winning a Grammy, the way actors dream about Oscars? It seems unlikely. But the thing that soured me forever on the Grammys was when they nominated Lauryn Hill for Best New Artist, despite her having won two Grammys two years earlier as a member of the Fugees. (I don't think she should have won Best New Artist, not when she was up against the Dixie Chicks, but the point is that she shouldn't have been nominated in the first place.)

Things I wish I'd phrased differently

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the man at the next table struggling to sit down. It looked to me like he might appreciate some help, so I offered my assistance. So I said,

"Do you need a hand?"

And as he sat down and I got a good look at him, I saw that he was missing most of both his arms. He was not in the slightest offended by what I said, but boy, do I feel like a jackass.
