Here's one last post inspired by my recent visit to the National Portrait Gallery. One of the galleries there features a series of photographic portraits by Hans Namuth of notable 20th century American artists, including the German-born abstract expressionist Hans Hofmann. Seeing his portrait reminded me of the painting seen here, one of my favorites from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

SPECIAL BONUS ART!

Yesterday was the 400th anniversary of the birth of Rembrandt van Rijn, so here's a special bonus painting, also from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669)
Old Man with a Gold Chain (also known as
Old Man in a Gorget and Black Cap), c. 1631
Oil on panel

Devotees of old board games may recall that both of these paintings were among the artworks featured in Masterpiece, an art auction game produced by Parker Brothers. As I recall, all of the artworks used in the game came from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. I remember it being a fun game, and it certainly introduced me to a lot of great art.
