Ten random things: May 24

Ten basketball teams Paul Shirley has played for:

  1. Menorca Bàsquet SAD (Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto)
  2. Kansas City Knights (American Basketball Association)
  3. Yakima Sun Kings (Continental Basketball Association)
  4. Panionios Atenas (Hellenic Basketball Association)
  5. Phoenix Suns (National Basketball Association)
  6. UNICS Kazan (Russian Basketball Super League)
  7. DKV Joventut Badalona (ACB)
  8. Beijing Aoshen Olympian (CBA)
  9. Jefferson West High School Tigers (Big 7 League)
  10. Chicago Bulls (NBA)

Paul Shirley is, according to Chuck Klosterman, one of the 500 best basketball players in the world. In practical terms, that means he's almost but not quite good enough to play in the NBA. At least, not consistently. He has played for several NBA teams over the course of his career, never for more than a season, and sometimes for less than two weeks. He's played on a number of European teams, and some American minor league teams, and although his career has hardly been glamorous, he's been able to call himself a professional basketball player for about six years now. He's also gained a following as a writer, having blogged about his life as an itenerant ball player for ESPN,, and on his own MySpace blog, and he just released his first book, Can I Keep My Jersey? 11 Teams, 5 Countries, and 4 Years in My Life as a Basketball Vagabond, which by a staggering coincidence I happen to be reading right now.
