count, ten, 10-A

Ten random things: June 4

Ten 2006-07 Illinois State High School Association champions:

  1. Wheaton-Warrenville South High School (boys football (class 8A), boys volleyball)
  2. Massac County High School (boys golf (class A), girls golf (class A))
  3. Maine South High School (chess)
  4. Elmwood High School (boys cross country (class A))
  5. Fenwick High School (boys water polo, girls basketball (class AA))
  6. Fremd High School (girls badminton, girls gymnastics)
  7. Wilmington High School (boys wrestling (class A))
  8. Rockford Lutheran High School (girls soccer (class A))
  9. Hinsdale Central High School (girls cross country (class AA), girls tennis)
  10. New Trier High School (boys soccer (class AA), boys swimming and diving, scholastic bowl (class AA))

Today's list comes at the suggestion of my dad, who told me last night that my high school alma mater Wheaton Warrenville South High School had won the 2007 IHSA boys volleyball tournament, their third title in four years and fourth in seven. They also won their fifth football championship this year. Go them.

And in the spirit of perpetuating high school rivalries, I'll point out that the more interesting thing about the class AA scholastic bowl championship was not that New Trier won the championship match, but that they beat our crosstown rival Wheaton North in doing so. Haw!

Music for Monday

It's been a while since I posted any music to share, so here are a couple of Beatles covers:

Big Daddy - Good Morning Good Morning
Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Within You Without You

I think I may like the BHT cover a little better than the original, but the one by Big Daddy is not as good as the version on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It is a fun, interesting take on the song, though, so it's worth a listen.

A parable

Once upon a time, there was a young Congressional staffer named Jessica Cutler. Jessica had consentual sex with several men, including some rich and powerful ones, and sometimes her partners would leave her monetary gifts after their sexual liaisons. Jessica also had a blog, and she wrote about her consentual sexual activities and her monetary gifts. When the blog received wide public notice, and she was named as its author, she was widely condemned for her actions. She was fired. She was sued by one of the men she slept with and wrote about in her blog. She was recently forced to declare bankruptcy to protect herself from the lawsuit. All for what she wrote in her online journal.

The moral of the story is that your online actions may have real world consequences. Be prepared to accept them.

This is strange

Here's a peculiar thing I discovered at work last night:

  1. Go to this website
  2. Select "Washington, D.C. Area" from the drop-down menu and click the "Find Location" button

I guess one capital city with an orbital motorway is pretty much the same as any other.

(no subject)

According to Wikipedia, today is International Innocent Child Abuse Victim Day. One might think the word Innocent unnecessary; I sort of doubt there would be much support for an International Child Abuse Victims Who Got What They Deserved Day.

Unless, of course, they were fictional child abuse victims, in which case there would probably be several LJ communities devoted to it.
