The American Film Instituted celebrated its 30th anniversary in 1997 by releasing 100 Years... 100 Movies, a list of the 100 best American movies. Last night, the AFI unveiled a new 100 Years... 100 Movies list, updated to include movies released since the creation of the first list, and to reflect changing cultural perspectives. In all, 23 films from the original list failed to appear on the new list. I'm fair to partly irritated that The Manchurian Candidate has fallen out of favor, and I don't think The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (one of the 23 new movies to make the list) should have been eligible at all, since it's not an American film. My ballot obviously got lost in the mail.
Check out the Wikipedia article about the new list if you need to know the other 13 movies that fell off the list, or the other 22 that appeared for the first time.
