Question about Glee

Why is FOX not broadcasting Glee letterboxed? That's obviously how it was filmed... unless the director of the last episode intentionally framed the scene of Will and Finn playing catch so that neither character was visible onscreen. Which is a valid artistic choice, I guess, but still, it seems very strange.

(Yeah, I'm a little behind in my TV watching.)
