Art on Sunday: Reading on the Rocks, Grand Manan

John George Brown (1831–1913)
Reading on the Rocks, Grand Manan, about 1877
Oil on canvas

This is another of the paintings featured in that calendar I mentioned the other day. Fun fact about this painting: it has a false Winslow Homer signature on it. Brown almost certainly didn't do it; he exhibited the painting under his own name in 1892. I can see why someone might try to pass it off as a Homer; it does display certain vaguely Homeresque qualities.

nieces and nephews, molly

My brother and nephew were in town this weekend for a short visit. My sister and I took them on a brief and uninteresting-to-anyone-not-related-to-us tour of Madison, culminating in a trip to the Monona Bait and Ice Cream Shop, located across the street from Schluter Park and Lake Monona. After eating our ice cream (we decided to pass on the bait), we cajoled my older nephew into taking a couple of family photos. And here they are!

So apparently pop music is not a reliable indicator when it comes to predicting the outcome of soccer matches. However, I stand by the earlier assertion that "Radar Love" is a better song than "Eres Tu."
