Ten random things: August 25

Ten magazines or newspapers I could have read at the Laundromat last night:

  1. Good Housekeeping (July 2010)
  2. National Geographic (April 2009)
  3. The New Yorker June 26, 2006)
  4. The Sun (August 2007)
  5. Road & Track (April 2010)
  6. Fortune (August 7, 2006)
  7. Gourmet (November 2009)
  8. Better Homes and Gardens (April 2009)
  9. Isthmus (August 13, 2010)
  10. Restaurants & Institutions (May 15, 2004)

I mentioned the other day that my house was recently fumigated, and even though the stuff that was used isn't supposed to leave a residue, I decided that it wouldn't be a bad idea to wash my comforter. (Frankly, it would have been a good idea regardless; it had been a while.) There's a Laundromat about a half-mile from my house, but I instead decided to go to one somewhat farther away, on the grounds that it was across the street from the Daisy Café and Cupcakery, which I'd been meaning to check out. Unfortunately, the café is only open past 5 PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Boing! So I hung out next door at Glass Nickel instead. But frankly, I would have been happy to stay at the Laundromat; it was one of the nicer ones I've ever been too: very clean, air conditioned, and a rack of magazines to read while waiting. I presume the magazines had been brought in by people in the neighborhood (or in the case of that last one, by the restaurant next door) and left behind, but I thought it was pretty cool that the owners of the Laundromat had decided to encourage that by providing a rack to keep them in instead of just throwing them away. I had a book with me (The Ask by Sam Lipsyte, if you must know), but I appreciated the gesture nonetheless.
