Ten random things: January 18

Ten people for whom streets in the neighborhood I grew up in were or may have been named:

  1. John Curtiss Underwood
  2. George Washington
  3. Theodore Roosevelt
  4. John J. Pershing
  5. Henry L. Dawes
  6. Calvin Coolidge
  7. Salmon P. Chase
  8. Charles Sumner
  9. Ulysses S. Grant
  10. Charles T. Campbell

I am sure of all these eponyms with the exception of the first and last. Underwood was an Abolitionist politician, and Campbell a Union general; I feel they are reasonably strong candidates given the other Abolitionist politicians and generals with nearby streets named for them.

I was inspired to make this list after doing a crossword puzzle earlier this evening in which Salmon P. Chase was one of the answers. Chase is a guy whose name almost never appears without the middle initial. Which is weird, because it's not like there are huge numbers of people out there named Salmon Chase. Or Salmon anything.
