Artistic Advent: Madonna and Child II

Madonna and Child II
Andres Serrano (b. 1950)
Cibachrome print
Madonna and Child II
Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Andreas Serrano is probably best known for his controversial 1987 work Piss Christ, a photographic print of a crucifix in a glass of urine. This photo was not nearly so controversial, probably because he didn't call it Piss Madonna and Child. (The Corcoran Gallery chooses not to admit that the icon in this photo is submerged in urine; they describe it merely as "a luminous amber liquid." Heh.) Whatever you may think of the symbolism of putting a crucifix or a Madonna and Child in a glass of urine luminous amber liquid, it's hard to deny that it makes for a striking image.
