Artistic Advent: "Serenade," A Christmas Fantasy (La Fontaine)

“Serenade,” A Christmas Fantasy (La Fontaine)

Oil on canvas
“Serenade,” A Christmas Fantasy (La Fontaine)
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.

What, you may ask, makes this painting a Christmas fantasy as opposed to, say, an Easter fantasy or a Flag Day fantasy? Beats the hell out of me, but if “America’s leading futurist artist” says it’s a Christmas fantasy, then by God, that’s what it is.

Speaking of futurism, I once helped produce a public-access television show about the futurist movement. I rather imagine it’s been lost to the ages by now, which can only be considered a good thing. In my defense, it was my friend Pete’s idea, but I helped write it, and acted in it, and provided some of the props, and chose the music that played over the credits, so I suppose I’m just as guilty as he.
