Artistic Advent: The Annunciation to the Shepherds

Today's Advent artwork is dedicated to pauraque, who sent me a neat card with dahlias on it. Thanks!

The interesting thing about this painting is how profoundly disinterested some of the shepherds seem in what's happening. The guy in the foreground with the pipe is acting like angels appear to him every day, and that one kid isn't paying attention at all. It's also a little odd that a woman would be out milking a cow in the fields in the middle of the night, but maybe that's just the way they did things back then. Other detail images are available at the National Gallery web site.
