Ten books that won the Newbery Medal:
- Lois Lowry, The Giver (1994)
- Charles Hawes, The Dark Frigate (1924)
- Ruth Sawyer, Roller Skates (1937)
- Marguerite de Angeli, The Door in the Wall (1950)
- Madeleine L'Engle, A Wrinkle in Time (1963)
- Susan Cooper, The Grey King (1976)
- Paul Fleischman, Joyful Noise (1989)
- Linda Sue Park, A Single Shard (2002)
- Laura Adams Armer, Waterless Mountain (1932)
- Robert Lawson, Rabbit Hill (1945)
It's been at least twenty years (probably closer to 25, come to think of it) since I read Waterless Mountain, but it sticks out in my memory as the worst Newbery winners I've ever read. It's possible I just wasn't able to appreciate it at the time, I guess. Maybe I should give it another try one of these days.
