Ten random things: January 13

Ten books that won the Newbery Medal:

  1. Lois Lowry, The Giver (1994)
  2. Charles Hawes, The Dark Frigate (1924)
  3. Ruth Sawyer, Roller Skates (1937)
  4. Marguerite de Angeli, The Door in the Wall (1950)
  5. Madeleine L'Engle, A Wrinkle in Time (1963)
  6. Susan Cooper, The Grey King (1976)
  7. Paul Fleischman, Joyful Noise (1989)
  8. Linda Sue Park, A Single Shard (2002)
  9. Laura Adams Armer, Waterless Mountain (1932)
  10. Robert Lawson, Rabbit Hill (1945)

It's been at least twenty years (probably closer to 25, come to think of it) since I read Waterless Mountain, but it sticks out in my memory as the worst Newbery winners I've ever read. It's possible I just wasn't able to appreciate it at the time, I guess. Maybe I should give it another try one of these days.
