Ten random things: April 6

Ten translations or interpretations of the sixth verse of the 23rd Psalm:

  1. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. (New Living Translation)
  2. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (King James Version)
  3. Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of Jehovah for ever. (American Standard Version)
  4. And thy mercy will follow me all the days of my life. And that I may dwell in the house of the Lord unto length of days. (The Douay-Rheims Bible)
  5. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (Revised Standard Version)
  6. Surely, goodness and loving-kindness shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of Jehovah for the length of the days. (Darby Translation)
  7. Truly, blessing and mercy will be with me all the days of my life; and I will have a place in the house of the Lord all my days. (The Bible in Basic English)
  8. Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell in the LORD's house forever. (Hebrew Names Version of World English Bible)
  9. Surely your goodness and love will be with me all my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever. (New Century Version)
  10. Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I'm back home in the house of God for the rest of my life. (The Message)

Every other month or so, I serve as liturgist or lay reader at my church. I found out earlier this evening that the next time I do so (April 17), I'll be reading the 23rd Psalm, so after choir rehearsal tonight I spent some time in the church library looking at different translations. The last few times I did the liturgy, I read from the New Living Translation, which I think works particularly well for reading aloud, but for this I think I'll stick with the RSV. The newer translations just don't sound right.
