It was, as they say, a beautiful day for a football game. And the Cornell College Rams came to play. Unfortunately, for most of the game they seem to have come play something other than football.
The game was not as close as the score might indicate. Cornell rallied in the closing minutes of the last quarter -- by which point, I assume, Loras was playing their scrubs -- but by then it was too late to salvage the game. Cornell's sole memorable play was an 80-yard return of a blocked PAT kick. It was not an impressive display of athleticism -- someone near me commented that it looked like the runner was running uphill -- but it was at least novel.
There was another play that was rather memorable, but not in a good way. Loras punted from their own 20; the Cornell receiver fielded the ball at the Cornell 20 and managed to get it about 2 yards downfield before fumbling. Loras recovered the fumble and scored two plays later. Boing!
Luckily, I didn't really care who won. Rah rah, go team and all that, but I was really there for the atmosphere. I mean, it's just a game.
