You've probably heard a lot over the last few days about how a state-owned company from the United Arab Emirates has purchased a "Great British" company and is thus in a position to take over the operation of several major ports on the Eastern seaboard of the United States. God knows I have, but that's probably because I listen to NPR several hours a day. Anyway, it's a reasonably interesting story, but for my nickel the most interesting thing about it is the name of the British company: the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. That's a great name. I'm inclined to oppose the merger just on the grounds that I don't want them to have to give it up.
