Ten random things: March 24

Ten defunct colleges:

  1. Pembroke College (Providence, R.I.; closed 1954)
  2. Moran Junior College (Bainbridge Island, Wash.; closed 1933)
  3. Franklin College (New Athens, Ohio; closed 1919)
  4. Nasson College (Springvale, Maine; closed 1983)
  5. Old Point Comfort College (Fort Monroe, Va.; closed 1923)
  6. Daniel Payne College (Birmingham, Ala.; closed 1977)
  7. Hawaii Loa College (Kaneohe, Hawaii; closed 1992)
  8. Chicora College for Women (Columbia, S.C., and Greenville, S.C.; closed 1930)
  9. Georgia Baptist College of Nursing (Atlanta, Ga.; closed 2001)
  10. Otoe University (Nebraska City, Neb; closed 1871)

I think it's a shame that an institution with a great name with Old Point Comfort College had to close. I found it and hundreds of other defunct colleges at the amazingly comprehensive but prosaically named List of Colleges and Universities that have Closed, Merged, or Changed their Names, maintained by Roy Brown of Westminster College of Missouri (which, as you'll recall from Tuesday's list, is a Presbyterian college) for no particular reason other than that he enjoys doing so. Behold, the wonder of the Internet.
