Ten random things: May 15

Ten Poet Laureate Consultants in Poetry to the Library of Congress:

  1. Stanley Kunitz (1974-76, 2000-01)
  2. Richard Wilbur (1987-88)
  3. Louise Glück, (1999-2000)
  4. Louise Bogan (1945-46 )
  5. Richard Eberhart (1959-61)
  6. Daniel Hoffman (1973-74)
  7. Robert Penn Warren (1944-45, 1986-87)
  8. Rita Dove (1993-95, 1999-2000)
  9. Robert Frost (1958-59)
  10. Josephine Jacobson (1971-73)

The first poet on this list, Stanley Kunitz, passed away yesterday at the age of 100. I'm impressed that he served in the position at such an advanced age. Granted, the U.S. Poet Laureate isn't called upon to do much of anything (he or she gives an annual lecture and poetry reading at the Library of Congress, and introduces poets in the LOC's annual poetry series), but still.
