Ten random things: Reader Request Month, day 16

Ten languages of Guatemala:

  1. Spanish (4,673,000 speakers)
  2. Ch'orti' (52,000 speakers)
  3. Q'anjobal (125,000 speakers)
  4. Akateko (35,000 speakers)
  5. Jakalteko (40,000 speakers)
  6. Garifuna (16,700 speakers)
  7. Ixil (71,000 speakers)
  8. Q'eqchi' (335,800 speakers)
  9. K'iche' (925,000 speakers)
  10. Tz'utujil (80,000 speakers)

Today's list is for figgy_newton, who wanted to see Guatemala mentioned in a list. My original thought was to post a poem that mentioned Guatemala, but I couldn't find one I liked. I found one that mentioned a town in Guatemala, but not the country itself, so I decided it didn't count.

Spanish is the official language of Guatemala, but the government officially recognizes 21 Mayan languages spoken by indigenous Guatemalans, and a Carib language called Garifuna, spoken in some coastal areas.
