Advent 2006: Adam lay ybounden

Adam lay ybounden

Adam lay ybounden,
    Bounden in a bond;
Four thousand winter
    Thought he not too long.
And all was for an apple,
    An apple that he took,
As clerkës finden written
    In their book.
Nor had one apple taken been,
    The apple taken been,
Then had never Our Lady
    A-been heaven’s queen.
Blessed be the time
    That apple taken was.
Therefore we may singen
    Deo gratias!

Traditional 15th century English carol

There's a series of Calvin and Hobbes strips in which Calvin and his family go camping, only to have it rain the entire time. In one of them, Calvin's father, sitting in a downpour so intense that he can barely be seen, remarks that at least the week hasn't been very buggy. This carol sort of reminds me of that, with its suggestion that the Fall of Man was a praiseworthy event, because otherwise Jesus might never have been born. That's a fairly impressive bit of rationalization, if you ask me.
