Ten animals I saw during my trip to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore this afternoon:
- Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)
- Sika Deer (Cervus nippon)
- Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
- Great Egret (Ardea alba)
- Northern Quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria)
- Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata)
- Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)
- Chincoteague Pony (Equus caballus)
- Delmarva Peninsula Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger cenerus)
- Louisiana Heron (Egretta tricolor)
I'm spending the weekend at Chincoteague Island's finest bed-and-breakfast, the Inn at Poplar Corner. Some might say my opinion on the subject is suspect, since my brother and sister-in-law own it, and because it's the only bed-and-breakfast on Chincoteague Island I've ever been to; nevertheless, I stand by my statement. The whole family is here; my sister and her family came down from Wisconsin yesterday, and my folks flew in this afternoon. This list owes its existence to my brother-in-law Jim, who knows far more about wildlife than I and without whose guidance I never could have identified most of the animals I saw.
