Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, 1907
Oil, silver, and gold on canvas
Neue Gallerie, New York
This is one of the most expensive paintings ever sold. It was looted by Nazis when they took over Austria, and was returned to its rightful owner, Maria Altmann, in 2006. Later that year, Altman sold the painting to Ronald Lauder, who has for many years worked to recover formerly Jewish-owned art that had been confiscated by Nazis, for $135 million.
