Michaelangelo was commissioned, supposedly on this date in 1498, to create this statue by a French cardinal, Jean de Billheres, who intended it for his own funeral monument. It served that purpose until the 18th century, when it was moved to its current location in a chapel immediately to the right of the entrance.
