Ten random things: August 29

Ten theatrical productions currently playing in New York:

  1. A Midsummer Night's Dream (Delacorte Theatre, Central Park)
  2. The Brig (Living Theater, 19-21 Clinton St.)
  3. Hairspray (Neil Simon Theater, 250 W. 52nd St.)
  4. Monty Python's Spamalot (Shubert Theater, 225 W. 44th St.)
  5. Wicked (Gershwin Theater, 222 W. 51st St.)
  6. Long Distance (Chashama Theater, 217 E. 42nd St.)
  7. Avenue Q (Golden Theater, 252 W. 45th St.)
  8. The Fantasticks (Snapple Theater Center, 210W. 50th St.)
  9. Masked (DR2, 103 E. 15th St.)
  10. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Circle in the Square, 50th St. between Broadway and 8th Ave.)

I've never seen a show on Broadway. I should do something about that some day.

That's interesting, because Shylock is a character in The Merchant of Venice. Must have been a Sweeps Week stunt. :-)

I think Avenue Q would be up your...avenue.

Possibly, though the songs I've heard from its soundtrack struck me as trying too hard to be clever. If I were to make a special trip to NYC for the express purpose of seeing one of these, it'd probably be Wicked. I'd also have to give due consideration to Hairspray, since I saw the movie musical and LOVED it.

I second the Avenue Q recommendation - it it awesome. As is Spamalot, I've been both twice.

Next on my must see list is Wicked, and maybe Hairspray.
