Ten random things: Reader Request Month, day 37

Ten movies about bicycling:

  1. Rad (1986)
  2. Quicksilver (1986)
  3. American Flyers (1985)
  4. Höllentour (2004)
  5. Breaking Away (1979)
  6. The Bicycle Thief (1948)
  7. A Sunday in Hell (1977)
  8. Nasu: Andarushia no Natsu (2003)
  9. Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003)
  10. The Flying Scotsman (2006)

Today's list is for ephany, who wanted to see a list -- a list, not a poem or a work of art -- about bicycles. But there's a bicycle in today's art post anyway, because I chose the picture before I remembered that she'd specifically requested a list.

I've seen three of these movies: Breaking Away, Bicycle Thieves, and Les Triplettes de Belleville. I'd forgotten that Breaking Away received a Best Picture nomination; I remembered it was popular, but not that it was so acclaimed. It lost to Kramer vs. Kramer, by the way, though it retrospect it probably should have lost to Apocalypse Now. And you know, now that I think about it, all three of those pictures are Oscar nominees. The Bicycle Thief was nominated for Best Screenplay, and received an honorary award for outstanding foreign language film (Best Foreign Language Film didn't become a competitive category until 1956). Les Triplettes de Belleville was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, and in my opinion should have won both, especially the latter. Actually, looking over the nominees, there should have been a tie for Best Song that year, with "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" sharing the prize. It certainly should not have gone to the dreadfully dull "Into the West."
