Advent 2007: The Adoration of the Shepherds

Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652)
The Adoration of the Shepherds, circa 1650
Oil on canvas
The Adoration of the Shepherds
Musée du Louvre, Paris

Today's work of art is from what may be the most famous art museum in the world: the Louvre, in Paris, France. I've been to the Louvre, but I wasn't there for long. Just long enough to see the Mona Lisa and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. And the Venus de Milo? Seems like the kind of thing you'd want to see if you had limited time, but I don't remember seeing it.

Previous Advent posts:
2003: Southwell, "This Little Babe"
2004: David, The Rest on the Flight into Egypt
2005: New Year's Celebrators
2006: Tennyson, from "In Memoriam"
