Advent 2007: The Madonna of Port Lligat
Salvador Dali (1904 – 1989)
The Madonna of Port Lligat, 1949
Oil on canvas
The Madonna of Port Lligat
Haggerty Museum of Art, Milwaukee

Today's art comes from the campus of Marquette University in Wisconsin. One of the things I find interesting about this work is that once it was finished, Dali submitted it to Pope Pius XII for approval. His Holiness did approve, but I wonder what would have happened if he hadn't. Would Dali have painted over it?
