Ten random things: January 28

Ten people in whose honor lunar craters are named:

  1. Judith Resnick, American astronaut
  2. Francis Baily, British astronomer
  3. André Lallemand, French astronomer
  4. George van den Bergh, Dutch law professor and amateur astronomer
  5. Aleksandr Petrovich Fedorov, Russian rocket scientist
  6. Polybius, Greek historian
  7. Johann Karl Friedrich Zöllner, German astrophysicist
  8. Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi, Prussian mathematician
  9. John Tebbutt, Australian astronomer
  10. Dante Alighieri, Italian poet

Today is the twenty-second (!) anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. Like, I suspect, most people, I can still remember clearly where I was and what I was doing when I heard about it: I was at school, in the small gym, having just completed my P.E. final exam. (We had final exams in every class, whether it made sense or not.) Mrs. Fischer came in and broke the news; at first, we didn't believe it, but eventually we realized that a) she didn't really have much of a sense of humor, and b) even if she did, this was an unlikely thing for her to joke about.
