Ten random things: February 28

Ten TV shows featuring a foreign-born domestic:

  1. Will & Grace (Rosario Salazar, Salvadoran maid)
  2. Mr. Belvedere (Lynn Belvedere, British butler)
  3. Batman (Alfred Pennyworth, British butler)
  4. Benson (Gretchen Kraus, German cook)
  5. The Courtship of Eddie's Father (Mrs. Livingston, Japanese housekeeper)
  6. Frasier (Daphne Moon, British housekeeper)
  7. Family Affair (Giles and Nigel French, British butlers)
  8. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (Geoffrey Barbara Butler, British butler)
  9. The Young and the Restless (Miguel Rodriguez, Mexican houseman)
  10. Arrested Development (Lupe, Mexican maid)

This list grew out of a discussion at dinner last night, where it was observed that both Family Affair and The Courtship of Eddie's Father featured foreign-born housekeepers. When I remembered that conversation during a slow moment at work earlier today, I started listing other shows like that; I came up with five more off the top of my head (nos. 1, 2, 3, 8, and 10), thought of another two when I sat down to make the list (nos. 4 and 6), and found one more (no. 9) after a little research. I should say that I don't know for sure that Lupe was Mexican, but I do know that her uncle was a professor at the University of Mexico City, so close enough.

People let me tell you 'bout my best friend..... I loved that show. How about Niles from The Nanny? The character was British, although the actor is American.

He came up in my research, but I decided the list had plenty of British butlers on it already. (Maybe I should have said Mr. French was French, like my niece thought.)

She wore a variety of hats; she was Martin's physical therapist and caretaker, and did other household tasks as needed. Housekeeper may not be the best word to describe her role in the household, but given the catch-all nature of her position, it's as good as any.
