Ten random things: March 13

Ten things that have been written about Richard Russo:

  1. "Russo makes sexual ambiguity feel homey and familiar." - O Magazine
  2. "If modern American life and the fiction that rises from it are really only a series of balancing acts, then Richard Russo is one of the most accomplished tightrope-walkers on the block." - The Guardian
  3. "Nobody does small-town life better than Richard Russo." - Atlanta Journal-Constitution
  4. "There is a big, wry heart beating at the center of Russo's fiction." - The New Yorker
  5. "Whatever characters he writes about, it's a glimpse not just into them, but also into us." - The Philadelphia Inquirer
  6. "It is not possible to describe what Mr. Russo does without letting the word 'quirky' creep in." - The New York Times
  7. "Nobody now writing rivals Russo at untangling the knots of family connection, love and sexuality, ambition and compromise, fidelity and betrayal that link and afflict a formidable gallery of vividly observed, generously portrayed characters." - Kirkus
  8. "The patron saint of small-town fiction." - Washington Post
  9. "Russo writes about [his] characters--their fistfights, bar nights, secret kisses, self-delusions--with such warmth that, whether it turns out to be a hellhole or heaven on earth, you're grateful to be back on his turf." - Entertainment Weekly
  10. "It's about time that people looking for a good read discovered the novels of Richard Russo." - Publishers Weekly

That last one? Very true. I just finished his latest, Bridge of Sighs, this afternoon, and was reminded, as if I needed to be, why he's one of my very favorite writers. I don't think it was as good as Empire Falls, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize in 2002, but it was damn good. That said, my favorite of his books remains Straight Man. Go read it!
