The House of Savoy no longer exists as a royal house; it came to an end in 1946, when the Italian monarchy was dissolved. Nevertheless, there are two people claiming to be the head of this non – existent royal house: Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia, the last Crown Prince of the Italian monarchy, who styles himself as the King of Italy in exile; and Amedeo, 5th Duke of Aosta, who says that Vittorio Emanuele lost his dynastic rights when he married without the permission of King Umberto II. Of course, that supposedly illegal marriage was in 1971, at which time Umberto was not the king of anything and there was no dynasty. Picky, picky.
