Ten random things: June 5

Ten things to do on your next trip to Amritsar:

  1. Make a pilgrimage to the Golden Temple
  2. Pay tribute to the victims of the Amritsar Massacre at the Jallianwala Bagh memorial
  3. Buy cheesy souvenirs with Guru Nanak on them
  4. Visit the Central Sikh Museum
  5. Admire the eclectic mix of Mughal and Sikh architecture on the campus of Khalsa College
  6. Walk through the gardens of Ram Bagh
  7. Study Hindu scriptures at Durgiana Temple
  8. Watch the nightly striking of the colors at the Attari Wagah border crossing between India and Pakistan
  9. Go bird-watching at Harike Pattan national wildlife sanctuary
  10. Shop for Punjabi jutti in Katra Jaimal Singh

Amritsar is, of course, a large city in western Punjab that serves as the setting for the 2004 movie Bride & Prejudice, which I watched today and can heartily recommend to anyone who likes Jane Austen, Bollywood musicals, or British romantic comedies, which should encompass most of the people reading this. Western tourism in India is a recurring topic in the movie, so I thought I'd see what there was to do in Amritsar if one chose to go there.
