The Squid and the Whale

Just finished watching The Squid and the Whale, which takes place in 1986 and features a character who tries to pass off a Pink Floyd song as an original composition. Granted, high school students are not generally well known for their ability to think things through, but it strains credulity to think anyone could think they could get away with such a thing. It wasn't even an old, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd song, it was "Hey You," which was only seven years old at the time. I was a high school student in 1986, and I know WLUP -- a popular station among my fellow students -- played Pink Floyd all the time. So I call shenanigans on that whole subplot.

The rest of the movie was good though. Jeff Daniels was great, and I liked that his character didn't get some kind of phony redemptive scene at the end.
