Poet's Corner: Tenderness and Rot

Tenderness and Rot

Tenderness and rot
share a border.
And rot is an
aggressive neighbor
whose iridescence
keeps creeping over.

No lessons
can be drawn
from this however.

One is not
two countries.
One is not meat
corrupting.

It is important
to stay sweet
and loving.

Kay Ryan (born 1945)

Kay Ryan was appointed the 16th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry last month, a fact that somehow escaped my attention until earlier this week. A solid choice, in my opinion. Judge for yourself; the Poetry Foundation maintains an archive of more than a dozen of her poems.
