Ten random things: October 16

Ten films that won Academy Awards in categories that have been retired:

  1. Krakatoa (Best Short Film-Novelty, 1933)
  2. Main Street on the March! (Best Live Action Short Film-Two Reels, 1941)
  3. The Scoundrel (Best Story, 1935)
  4. Cover Girl (Best Scoring of a Musical Picture, 1944)
  5. Anna and the King of Siam (Best Art Direction-Black and White, 1946)
  6. The Rose Tattoo (Best Cinematography-Black-and-White, 1955)
  7. The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (Best Assistant Director, 1935)
  8. Wings (Best Engineering Effects, 1927-8)
  9. A Damsel in Distress (Best Dance Direction, 1937)
  10. West Side Story (Best Costume Design-Color, 1961)

I watched no. 4 this afternoon. Not one of the all-time great movie musicals, but the sequences with Gene Kelly and Rita Hayworth dancing together will put a smile on your face, and there are some terrific songs by Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin. Its Oscar, by the way, was awarded to Carmen Dragon, a name I -- and you, if you have ever played an instrument -- know very well as the arranger of an arrangement of "America the Beautiful" that I performed dozens of times as a member of my high school and college concert bands.
