Advent 2008: Lully, Lulla, Thou Little Tiny Child

Here's another carol by one of my favorite recording artists: me! "Lully, Lulla, Thou Little Tiny Child" is perhaps better known as "The Coventry Carol," reflecting its origin as part of a mystery play performed in Coventry called The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The carol tells the jolly Christmas story of the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered the death of all male children under the age of two in Bethlehem. Providentially, Jesus had already fled to Egypt with his family, having been warned of the impending slaughter by an angel. This story is mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, and nowhere else. Since there is no other historical or archaeological record of the massacre, some theologians has suggested it didn't really happen, but rather was a later insertion meant to link Jesus to an Old Testament prophecy: "Thus saith the Lord: A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children; she refuseth to be comforted for her children, because they are not" (Jeremiah 31:15).

Whether it happened or not, the song remains the same. This recording is from the Cathedral Choral Society's 2004 album Welcome All Wonders! Christmas at Washington National Cathedral, which I instructed you to buy a week ago yesterday. It probably hasn't arrived yet, what with the holiday and all, so this will whet your appetite.
